Freshman guard Jahmir Young scored 24 points in regulation and Charlotte did a chunk of its damage at the free throw line in overtime to defeat visiting Wake Forest 67-65 on Sunday night in Charlotte, N.C.

Jordan Shepherd, a transfer from Oklahoma, added 16 points for Charlotte (2-1).

Charlotte scored the first six points of overtime -- all on free throws. Chaundee Brown scored Wake Forest's first five points of the extra session, and Brandon Childress' 3 drew the Demon Deacons within 67-65 with 42.7 seconds left.

After Charlotte missed at the other end, Childress was short on a 3-point attempt with nine seconds left and the Demon Deacons (2-2) never got the ball back.

Childress finished with 19 points and Brown had 12.

There were clutch shots in the last minute of regulation.

Malik Martin's 3-point basket with 21.9 seconds remaining gave Charlotte a 57-54 lead. Wake Forest freshman Ismael Massoud drained a 3 from the left wing at the 16.2-second mark.

Young's 3 was off the mark to end regulation.

Following a 29-29 halftime tie, Wake Forest scored only five points in the first seven minutes of the second half. But the 49ers couldn't pull away in what became several ragged stretches.

Charlotte went almost 10 minutes without a field goal and fell into a tie at 43 when Wake Forest's Olivier Sarr hit two free throws at the 8:36 mark. Then Young countered with a 3-pointer to end the field goal drought.

Later, Shepherd made back-to-back runners in the lane as the 49ers went up 52-48. Then Young's jumper from inside the top of the key extended the margin with 4:24 to play.

Sarr's tip-in was part of a three-point play, but two defensive stops for Wake Forest were followed by turnovers.

Childress' long 3-pointer tied the game at 54. The Demon Deacons missed a chance to take the lead, giving Charlotte the ball with just less than 40 seconds left.

The 49ers worked for Martin's shot from the right wing, marking just his second basket in seven shots.

Wake Forest's Andrien White, a three-year player for Charlotte before transferring, posted 10 points.

The teams met for the fourth consecutive season, with Wake Forest winning the first three in that stretch.
